Neil Torr shares his thoughts on the X-A1

“Would I recommend this as a good place to start for someone ready to move on from a bridge camera? Absolutely.”

I have been fortunate enough recently to have had a Fujifilm X-A1 on review, so now I come to share my thoughts, but first of all to put this in perspective here is a bit of history about my photographic background.

Before Jan 2012 as much as I enjoyed taking photos my cameras had consisted of film compacts, simple point and shoot jobs. I had access to some digital cameras belonging to my wife after that, but again they were point and shoot compacts.

Having been to RAF Waddington International Airshow in 2011 with a compact I soon decided I wanted something that allowed me to do more with photos. As much as I fancied the idea of a DSLR I couldn’t justify the cost with so little proper experience in photography so I opted for the HS20EXR bridge camera in December 2011.

Since then I have found myself enjoying photography more and more finding my favourites subjects to be airplanes, birds (particularly birds of prey) and architecture, as well as the obvious family photos. So when I was given the chance to try the X-A1 (together with the XC16-50mmF3.5-5.6 OIS lens) I jumped at the opportunity.

As an introductory level CSC it does not have all of the high tech wizardry of some of it fellow X-series siblings, but I soon found it was a great camera and performs significantly better than the HS20. So what were the key differences between the HS20 and X-A1?

Physically it is a much smaller camera in all respects and the build quality seems much better, though the HS20 is by no means of poor build quality. One thing in particular that was quite nice was the metal tripod screw – on the HS20 it is plastic and so can be a bit of a worry for damage.

One thing that I did miss on the X-A1 was the EVF. However, on using the camera it became apparent the LCD panel was of a good quality and although there are situations I would have preferred to have the EVF it was certainly not the end of the world. Most people coming from compact cameras would not notice the EVF missing as they tend not to be on compact cameras anymore.

Using the X-A1 felt like a very natural progression from the HS20, the menu layout was very similar but with some improvements made to navigation – the Q-button was a particularly handy addition for quick changes when needed.

Having a much larger sensor the X-A1 was able to utilise a much wider range of light levels and capture far more detail. In my time with it there were a number of occasions I would have had to resort to using the flash on the HS20 but the X-A1 took the low light in its stride and simply took great pictures at higher ISO values. For once I was using auto ISO usually with an upper limit of 3200, though 6400 was also still quite acceptable, a big improvement of the 400 which is the highest I would normally use on the HS20. This was particularly noticeable in trips to Oxburgh Hall (a National Trust property) and Peterborough Cathedral. The good low light performance, allowing pictures to be taken handheld that would have needed the tripod with the HS20. This allowed a far more productive time as I was not having to set up the tripod, adjust angles, settings, fiddle with a remote release, etc, etc. It even allowed for easier capture of sunsets whilst being driven around in a car.

Visiting The Raptor Foundation, a near by raptor sanctuary, I needed a lens with a larger zoom to make the most of the visit but found in action, it performed well, being able use higher ISO settings for faster shutter speeds for the in flight shots. Even with the limited zoom of the XC16-50mm lens I was still able to get some great images of the birds. Even birds I couldn’t get very close to the images were high enough quality to be able to crop in.

As a simple amateur I have never done an official wedding shoot, and yet I found myself being asked to do just that for my brother-in-law. As I had the X-A1 this became a far less nerve racking thing for me to do than might have been the case. I was however worried about battery life as I had no spare. Even in this department thought the X-A1 performed beyond my expectations. I had expected no more than the 350 shots it is rated for so I had my HS20 on stand by for emergencies. However, almost 500 shots in and the single charge was only just beginning to show signs of running out.

As well as all of this, with my two children – one of whom was only 2 weeks old at the time of receiving the X-A1 – there were a number of cheeky shots made easy simply by the quick start up and focus, catching moments that might otherwise have been missed.

As you may have guessed I rather liked the X-A1. As much as I love my HS20 there really is no comparison. Despite being a different breed of camera, the X-A1 is no more difficult to operate than the HS20EXR, in fact if anything there are improvements of the controls with the X-A1.

I have now returned the X-A1 to the kind people of Fuji who allowed me to review it. Even at essentially the bottom of the X-series range it is an amazing camera to work with and a great introduction to CSCs.

Do I miss it? Yes, and it’s only been a few days.

Would I recommend this as a good place to start for someone ready to move on from a bridge camera? Absolutely.

 

What to shoot now – spring into life

It won’t be long before the natural world starts showing signs of life, which will give photographers across the globe plenty of subjects to train their cameras on.

To start, look low to the ground where bulbs will soon start to break the surface of the soil. Getting down low is the key to success and those X-series cameras with an articulated rear LCD will come in handy to help you frame up shots without having to lie on the floor.

Don’t be afraid to crop in close on snowdrops and daffodils, selecting the macro mode to ensure you focus as close as possible. If you’re shooting on a sunny day, placing your camera flat on the ground and pointing the lens upwards will deliver a ‘worm’s eye view’ of the flowers, which works particularly well with yellow crocus, tulips and daffodils set against a deep blue sky. Consider using the Velvia Film Simulation mode to boost colours, or fit a polarising filter to really saturate primary hues.

Feeding time

If you don’t fancy scrabbling in the dirt, birds and wildlife get a little bolder in the springtime as they start searching for mates and building nests. Use a telephoto lens like the XF55-200mm or XC50-230mm to keep a safe distance and make sure you shoot against a clear, uncluttered background such as foliage or even the sky to be sure nothing distracts from the subject. With any wildlife subject you’ll need to be patient; the best shots will come to those who wait… or those who set up feeding stations in their gardens!

The low sun at this time of year is perfect for people shots indoors. Carefully choose a window – you want sunlight to bathe your subject in, not to blind them. Position your subject nice and close, then switch your camera to aperture-priority mode, using a wide aperture to throw the background out of focus.

A day in your life

If a 365 project is too daunting, perhaps you can manage 24 hours. Pick a typical day and document your life. It’s easy to do with the portable X cameras. Start with your breakfast and only put the camera down when you go to bed. Apply the usual rules though: think about your shots and compose carefully, don’t simply machine-gun it.

Striking silhouettes

Set aside the usual approach to exposing your subject and expose for the background to get a dark, striking silhouette of a person, tree or church – easily recognisable subjects work best. Switch to spot metering and take a reading from the bright background to ensure your subject is rendered as an outline.

Emulate the look of yesteryear’s photos with one of the X-series Film Simulation modes. All the X-series cameras offer these magic modes; the X-Pro1 boasts a stunning selection of 10, including names you may remember from film boxes, such as Provia and Velvia. Find them in your camera’s Shooting menu or via the Q menu.

In countries around the world, Shrove Tuesday (4 March) is a day for celebration; in many, such as Germany and Italy, this means carnival, while in the UK, it’s the chance to flip pancakes. Whichever is happening near you, photograph it. For a carnival parade, try the Pop Color Advanced Filter (on the XQ1, X100S, X-M1, X20 and X10).

“This was shot near my house on the beach at Carcavelos just outside Lisbon. It’s an area I know well, and I have recently started shooting a personal project there. I’m making a series of long exposures around sunset (some up to six minutes) of this pier and the sea. The idea is to get the locals to view the area differently. For this photo, I also applied a Velvia preset in Lightroom; I have used Velvia slide film for almost 20 years!

“I am a recent convert to the Fujifilm X-series after using Canon EOS for more than 20 years. I like to photograph travel, landscapes and people. For these subjects the Fuji works very well and the prime lenses are really good. I now have an X-E1 and X-Pro1 with three lenses: 14mm, 35mm and a Zeiss 50mm F2.”

“I live in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, and photography has been one of my hobbies for about 30 years. I took this shot at Blenheim Gardens, in Minehead in Somerset. I take all my infrared images hand-held, with no tripod – the fixed lens/sensor/ viewfinder combination on the X100 allows you to use it like this with the Hoya filter.

“I’ve been shooting with digital for the last seven years, and the Fujifilm X100 has been my best purchase  –  pound for pound, it’s the best camera on the market. It’s so adaptable and versatile, yet easy to carry, and you get super image quality. “This image was taken early one morning in the Ardennes region. 
I like to be at one with nature and try to create atmospheric images, which I think I managed here. Doing this generally means paying particular attention to how the light is falling on a scene.

“I’m 59 years old and have been taking photographs since I was around 12. I’ve had several exhibitions, but now I simply enjoy taking photographs while I’m traveling. The Fujifilm X-Pro1 is perfect for this – it’s light enough to be carried all day and delivers brilliant results.”

What to shoot now – A Winter Wonderland

Christmas may be over, but there are still plenty of subjects and techniques to keep you and your X-series camera busy.

The days may be shorter and the temperatures lower, but there’s no denying that the winter months are a very photogenic time of year. Hopefully, we’ll get a good fall of snow over the next few weeks, which means great photos are to be had.

Like any time of year, taking good pictures in winter does involve some planning. If snow is forecast overnight, it could be worth an early start the following morning. If you’re lucky, it will be bright and sunny and you’ll get shots of the landscape before the snow starts to melt or gets covered in footprints. With this in mind, be sure to check the weather forecast the night before.

Make sure you charge up your batteries too, as cold weather can reduce battery performance. Likewise, we’d advise you to leave your camera (minus the battery) by the front door – this tends to be the coldest part of the house and makes it less likely for your gear to mist up due to a change in temperature when you get outside. Buying an extra battery would be a good idea, especially if you plan to be out and about for a while, plus be sure to pack a warm drink for yourself, in addition to making sure you have plenty of warm clothing. Oh, and make sure you put the battery back in the camera before you leave!

Once you’ve set foot outdoors, there will be plenty of photo opportunities to capture – these images above should give you some pointers. As well as going for the obvious landscape shots, look for more abstract images as well as close-up and detail pictures.

Most X-series cameras offer a preset Snow program mode, which should be your first port of call if you want to get great results quickly. To take more control, use exposure compensation to make sure the white snow comes out white. Select +1 in overcast conditions and +2 in sunny conditions to avoid underexposure.

While we’re sure you’ll make every effort to keep snow and moisture away from your X-series camera while you’re out, if it does get dropped in the white stuff or picks up moisture, place it in a plastic bag with a few sachets of silica gel when you get home. Put them in a warm (not hot) place for a day or two and it should clear up.

Lots of photographers traditionally start a 365 project at this time of year. The premise is simple: take one picture a day for a whole year. It sounds simple enough, but it will give both you and your photography a real challenge. To add extra spice, you could insist on using just one feature, lens or function on your X-series camera!

Funfairs spring up in towns during the festive period and you can use them to create eye-catching long exposure images. You’ll need a solid tripod and a low ISO (100 or 200), then select a long shutter speed of around four seconds and fire away. Alternatively, try your camera’s Night Portrait exposure mode and get a low light portrait.

In colder weather, food becomes more scarce for birds. Attract them to your garden by offering a regular supply of nuts, suet balls and fruit. They’ll keep coming back once they know food is on tap, giving you the chance to photograph them. The XF55-200mm or XC50-230mm lens would be perfect to get in close.

Interiors of churches and cathedrals provide a plethora of photo opportunities. Head to one on an overcast day to avoid strong contrast between light and dark areas and try a range of shots including majestic wide-angle images. Set your X-series camera’s Dynamic Range to DR400 to maximise highlight and shadow detail.

Warm up those winter shots with a candle. Whether on their own or in groups they make perfect subjects. Combined with a face, they make great portraits, too. Increase the ISO on your X-series camera to avoid the flash firing, which will spoil the effect of the ambient light. Leave the white-balance on Auto to retain a warming glow.
